The school holidays are nearly over and the anxiety is rising as students and families prepare for a new era.
This disquiet is of course related to the fact that sleep ins, lazy days and perhaps summertime jobs will be gone for several months, but for some it's the change in government policy which will ban mobile phones, smart watches and tablets.
The prohibition on phones will take effect during school hours, beginning from the time students arrive until the end of the school day, including before school and during break times.
Students from kindergarten to Year 6 must have mobile phones in their possession during the school day.
Students from Years 7 to 12 must have their phones turned off during school hours and kept off and out of sight until the end of the school day.
Why is this happening? Simple really, to lessen distractions in the classroom and reduce the possibility of bullying.
And it appears to be working.
One school principal where the policy is already in place reports classrooms are more focused and schoolyard interactions have improved.
Education Minister Sue Ellery said last year "most students have said they enjoy the break from constant notifications and messaging."
I have 2 little mates at a very prestigious school in Perth who are about to start first year high school and they really are going to have to make some adjustments as they spend a lot of time on phones or tablets, their parents however are ectstatic.
Now it will be concentation on schoolwork and at lunchtime being involved in activities with their mates rather than sitting alone trawling through facebook.
There will be screams about personal liberties and safety issues "what if I'm upset after I get into trouble and want to ring Mum or Dad, how will I keep in touch with my friends, and how will anyone know what I had for lunch if it's not on my Instagram page?"
You know what, they'll just have to live with it.
And the best thing is they'll have more time for the important stuff, like algebra!
